Weekly Weather: Sun

For this round of Weekly Weather collages I decided to do another atlas as my base. However, the pages/signatures came apart from the binding so I’ll be doing each two page spread separately and when I come to the end of the year or when we start repeating the weather topics, I’ll bind them all together.

This week’s topic is Sun (the star that is the central body of the solar system, around which the planets revolve and from which they receive light and heat: its mean distance from the earth is about 93 million miles (150 million km), its diameter about 864,000 miles (1.4 million km), and its mass about 330,000 times that of the earth; its period of surface rotation is about 26 days at its equator but longer at higher latitudes.)

This year I went with SUNflowers! I found so many images I couldn’t resist.

Weekly Weather: Snow

This week’s topic is Snow (atmospheric water vapor frozen into ice crystals and falling in light white flakes or lying on the ground as a white layer).

Weekly Weather: Hurricane

For this round of Weekly Weather collages I decided to do another atlas as my base. However, the pages/signatures came apart from the binding so I’ll be doing each two page spread separately and when I come to the end of the year or when we start repeating the weather topics, I’ll bind them all together.

This weeks topic is Hurricane (is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane , typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone. A hurricane is a storm that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and northeastern Pacific Ocean, a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, and a cyclone occurs in the south Pacific or Indian Ocean.)

Because hurricanes happen primarily in the tropics, I chose a lot of palm tree scenes – with a few stormy seas thrown into the mix. A couple of upside-down sailboats and waves crashing over some birdhouses remind me that even as I live in a coastal area, every year without a hurricane means another sigh of relief of not having to evacuate and/or worry about flooding. Not so with my sister whose house has been flooded due to a storm.

Cast off art project

Last week I went to an altered books class and afterward I helped clean up. To my surprise I found the book below in the trash can.cast off ab 1

One of the students had worked on it for two hours — she tried making a window–cast off ab 2

Dyed pages with peach colored ink, added some pretty paper scraps…cast off ab 3

That included a feather and a transparency over an image of a house…cast off ab 4

She tried her hand at decorative folding and tearing…cast off ab 5

And decided in the end she hated it so much she tossed it away in the trash can and walked away. I fished it out, brought it home thinking I would finish it for her. But now, I think, I will leave it as is to remind myself to never give up on an art project. This book has lots of potential. The student-artist has lots of potential. But she seems to believe herself to have no talent and as such, throws her potential away. That saddens me.cast off ab 6

So, to the unknown student artist – you may not believe in your own talent but you’ve helped me to believe in mine. And for that, I thank you.

New Altered Book

The local library offered a free class on Altered Books this week – and being one to never turn down a free craft class – and even though I have at least two altered books waiting in the wings for me to do – I went to the class and started one anyway!

The book is a Reader’s Digest Condensed Book, Summer, 1956. The title of the over all book is Harry Black Teal. I chose that name because the first story in the book is called “Harry Black” and since most of the illustrations were various shades of blue and green, the theme will be the color teal with a masculine flair if I can manage it. (Being a girl, I find it difficult to think like a man.) The pages I’m showing today are just the ones I started on Monday night at the class and by no means are the finished product.

I’ll post updates as I work toward finishing it.

Weekly Weather: Clouds

For this round of Weekly Weather collages I decided to do another atlas as my base. However, the pages/signatures came apart from the binding so I’ll be doing each two page spread separately and when I come to the end of the year or when we start repeating the weather topics, I’ll bind them all together.

This week’s topic is Clouds (a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atmosphere, typically high above the ground).

This week I went with clouds of all colors and shapes and included somethings that would make wonderful cloud formations.

Weekly Weather: Rainbow

For this round of Weekly Weather collages I decided to do another atlas as my base. However, the pages/signatures came apart from the binding so I’ll be doing each two page spread separately and when I come to the end of the year or when we start repeating the weather topics, I’ll bind them all together.

This week’s topic is Rainbow (an arch of colors formed in the sky in certain circumstances, caused by the refraction and dispersion of the sun’s light by rain or other water droplets in the atmosphere).

With this collage I am celebrating real rainbows and rainbow colors! I had three pages to work with so there are 5 views. I hope you like my rainbows!!
