30. Reflection Post: What did you think of this challenge?

I enjoyed this challenge quite a bit. Its nice to stroll down memory lane sometimes. I have both good and bad memories about my childhood. This challenge was good in that it helped me remember a lot of the good and put to bed the bad. I wouldn’t want to repeat it too often, but it was a fun September. Here is a group of photos I used throughout the challenge!

29. Were you into Star Wars or were you a Trekkie? Both or neither?

Neither until the movie Star Wars came out. Loved it.

I never was into Star Trek – the original one and the only one of the subsequent series I liked was Star Trek: the Next Generation.

I haven’t seen any of the recent movies of either Star Trek or Star Wars.

28. When did you go on your first date? What did you do? Where did you go? Did you go out on another date with that person?

I went to IHOP with a boy named Charles. I really liked him and we went out a couple of times  – this was when I was 17. He started talking about ‘going all the way’ and it scared me so I broke it off with him. Occasionally I wonder what happened to him!

 This isn’t the actual restaurant we went to but it looks just like it – this was 1976!!

1. A class you wish you would have taken? 

I wish I would have taken more art classes – that is my true passion.

2. What’s your favorite comic figure and why?

I like Garfield. Why? he’s a cat with a bad attitude. He says stuff I wish I could say.

3. Name something you wish you could like.

I wish I could like tomatoes. I like tomato sauce but I just can eat them raq- even though they are very pretty and smell good.

4. Tell me about your first crush / first date / first kiss.

My first kiss was when I was 8 years old – I had a crush on a boy named Steve and we stole a kiss one day while playing in some woods.

 

5. Who was your best friend when you were 10?

My friend Caroline – she loved horses as much as I did and collected horse models – we used get all of our models together and play with them the way other kids play with dolls or action figures. We had families with moms and dads, the colts and fillies would go off to school, the dads to work and moms stayed home and cooked (it was the 1969).

6. What sign are you? Do you believe in astrology?

I am a Pisces – the twin fishes. I don’t believe in it, but I frequently read my horoscope just to see what it says.

27. What do you remember the most from the year that you turned 19? What was going on in your life back then?

When I was 19 I was living on my own for the first time and working on the Naval Base in the optician’s store. It was the first time I got glasses – I was so amazed that the trees had separate leaves – not just fuzzy blobs of green.

26. What is something about your younger years that you absolutely would not change or trade for anything?

The relationship I had with my beloved grandmother, Mama Bush. She was the epitome of a southern belle – gracious, friendly, gentle, and loving. She had 13 grandchildren and loved us all equally the same. She was talented in many things, and passed on that knowledge to all who asked. She was also known as “Mama Bush” to all the neighborhood children whom she welcomed into her home.

25. If you could go back in time to your childhood, would you? What would you want to change, if anything?

I would definitely NOT go back in time to my childhood. I wouldn’t mind going back to my young adult self to give myself some advice, but other than that I wouldn’t change anything.

 

Since it’s autumn, pumpkins are in season, and my answer was so short, I thought I’d post and Auntie Goose Nursery rhyme for fun!! For those of you who don’t know, a couple of years ago I rewrote all the nursery rhymes I could find and illustrated them using MS-Word. I’m playing catch up this morning. Friday’s are always an extra long work day for me (work 4 hours, 4 hour break, work 4 hours) but added to a 12 hour work day I went visiting family last night so I didn’t get home until really late. So here is my catch-up post for the 19-Somethin’ Challenge!

23. How old were you when you bought your first car? What kind of car did you get? Do you still have it?

I was 18 when I bought my first car, it was the Datsun 710 I mentioned in an earlier question. I learned to drive with that car and my dad made me buy it from him. I had to go to the bank and get a long (co-signed, of course). I hated him for that – my friends were just given cars. But years later I see his point and don’t hate him for that anymore. 

24. Is there another song that makes you reminiscent of your teenage years?

“One is the Loneliest Number” by Three Dog Night. I loved (still do) Three Dog Night’s music.  I remember wanting to marry Chuck Negron! Of course I don’t know what my other husband-to-be, Jay Osmond would have thought of a second husband!

22. When did you first live on your own? Did you buy or rent your first home? Do you have a picture of it? Please share it if you do.

I have moved so much in my life that I would prefer to never move again – but that probably won’t happen. I’ve never owned a home – renting and/or sharing with others. My first place on my own was to a 2nd story apartment in an old house in Olde Towne, Portsmouth when I was 19. A year later I moved to the third story in the same house. Then a move to share with a friend in Virginia Beach, then to a duplex in Norfolk, then back to Virginia Beach sharing with 2 other people; then renting a room from a married couple; then back to Norfolk to share with a mother and her two kids; then Norfolk again to share a mobile home; then back to Virginia Beach to share a townhouse with a friend; a move home to mom’s; a move to my sister’s house when she moved to North Carolina; then the big move to Georgia; back to my mom’s in Virginia Beach and finally to where I am now. I always swore my mom stole me from a band of gypsies since roaming is in my blood!!

21. Tell me about the first home you remember living in with your parents.

The first home I remember was in Gainesville, Florida. My father moved us there from Mississippi so he could get his PhD at the University of Florida.

The house was a one-story brick house on a crawl space. I shared a bedroom with my sister. It had another bedroom, a kitchen, dining room and living room. There was a detached garage and we had some nice neighbors. I have quite a few memories from that house, some good, some bad. 

One poignant memory I have is my sister and  I holding hands – each in our separate beds  –  while listening to the radio announcement of which birthdays were pulled for Selective Service. This was during the Vietnam War. We were young but we knew about the war and how many people weren’t coming back. As an aside, later on in the 70s I had a POW bracelet – my soldier never came home. He was and still is MIA.

20. Did you ever have “big” hair? If so, please share a picture!

Big Hair??? You Bet!!

 Alright, it’s not that ‘big’ but for my hair its as big as I could get it. That ‘do’ is the result of washing, blow drying with mousse, hot curlers, carefully combing and picking with a pick (my hair is super fine) and finally lacquering with hair spray. I used so much hair spray that even if the roots wanted to go limp the shell of spray held it in place. I went through this hour-long ritual 7 days a week for many years. That’s the only part of the 80s I’m glad is extinct!
